Police have charged a Norfolk man after an officer saw him hauling a 53-foot trailer behind his pickup truck using a homemade hitch.
The 43-year-old was stopped on McDowell Road in Norfolk County around 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 10, according to Const. Ed Sanchuk.
'The officer stopped that vehicle and realized that truck was actually using a fifth-wheel homemade attachment attached to the trailer hitch of the pickup truck as well.'
One aspect of the handmade rig quickly caught the officer's eye, said Sanchuk — 'just one little pin,' some chains and a lone brake line were connecting the truck to its load.
'There's no other line … to put those trailer brakes on so if that pin should have come loose and that trailer went into oncoming traffic we could have a serous injury or fatality on our hands.'
The man was charged with over-length vehicle and prohibited use of an orange triangle sign indicating a slow moving vehicle, said Sanchuk, who added the trailer was empty and no one was injured.
The OPP posted photos of the truck and trailer on Twitter, where some have questioned why the man was stopped seeing as he was using a slow moving sign.

Sanchuk said police's primary concern was the way the load was secured.
'When you look at the actual attachment of the trailer that truck should not have been pulling that trailer for everyone's safety,' he explained. 'If you need to transport items in a trailer make sure you're doing it in an appropriate manner.'
